The metaphor is load-bearing rather than decorative. A fire needs fuel, air and a shape to burn in, and creative work fails for exactly those three reasons: nothing new coming in, no space around the work, or no container to hold it. The volume takes each in turn and gives it practices.
It is also, quietly, about the opposite problem — the person whose fire is fine and who is burning through material faster than they can gather it.
