The Enneagram is misused more than any other instrument in this Canon, because the surface descriptions are entertaining and the mechanism underneath takes work. The mechanism is that each type is organised around a particular avoidance, that the avoidance produces both the person's genuine gift and their characteristic damage, and that the two cannot be separated.
This volume works each of the nine at that level, with the instinctual variants, the movements under stress and in security, and the specific developmental task of each type. It is direct about the fact that a type is a strategy, not a self, and about what it costs a person to see that.
