Nigredo, albedo, rubedo — blackening, whitening, reddening. The alchemists were describing an operation on matter and, according to a long line of readers from Jung onward, an operation on a person. This volume takes the sequence seriously as a map of transformation: the decomposition that must be allowed to finish, the clarification that follows it, and the return to ordinary life carrying something that was not there before.
It is written for the person in the middle of one of these phases, and is most useful in the first, where every instinct is to stop it early.
