Elderhood is not seniority, and it is not age. It is a specific developmental position: the point at which a person's primary work stops being their own advancement and becomes the holding of a field for other people. Cultures that have a role for this produce elders. Cultures that do not produce older adults who are still competing.
The volume describes the transition, the grief in it, the failure modes on both sides — the elder who will not let go and the elder who withdraws too early — and the practices that support it.
