Before story was entertainment it was medicine, given to a particular person at a particular time for a particular condition. The teller's skill was in the selection and the timing rather than the performance, and a well-chosen story could carry something that direct speech could not get past a person's defences.
This volume treats storytelling that way: how to choose, when to tell, how much to explain afterwards — and the strong argument for explaining nothing at all.
