Constructive-developmental psychology holds that a person's way of making meaning has a structure, that the structure changes in a describable sequence, and that each change works the same way: something that was doing the looking becomes something that can be looked at. Nothing is added; the same material gets reorganised, and what a person can hold changes as a result.
This is the principal treatment on the shelf — the orders of consciousness described from inside, the transitions with their characteristic disorientations, the assessment literature, the evidence and the disputes, and the ways the theory has been misused as a ranking of persons rather than a description of a structure. If you read one volume of the Canon before the others, this is the reasonable choice. It is still being written, and what stands is open to read as it stands.
