Jane Loevinger built the most empirically careful stage theory in the field on an unlikely instrument: a sentence completion test, scored against a manual. Susanne Cook-Greuter extended it upward. The resulting sequence — impulsive, self-protective, conformist, self-aware, conscientious, individualistic, autonomous, construct-aware — is the closest this field has to a measured backbone.
