Dąbrowski's central claim is uncomfortable and, handled carelessly, dangerous: that some breakdowns are the correct response to a structure that has become too small for the person inside it, and that sedating them can stop a development in progress. The claim is only usable alongside its counterpart, which is that many breakdowns are not this, and that mistaking one for the other has a serious cost.
