Two errors are available to a leader with a contemplative practice. The first is to take the role entirely personally, so that every challenge is an attack. The second is to float above it, treating hierarchy as illusion while continuing to sign the decisions — which is the more damaging of the two, because the people below are still living inside a power relation the leader has stopped acknowledging.
This volume takes the position that the role is real, the power is real, and the practice is what allows a person to hold both without collapsing into either. It is written for people who actually hold authority.
