Horizontal development adds capability. Vertical development changes the structure that capability sits in, and it does not respond to the same inputs: it is driven by challenge that exceeds the current structure, held long enough, with support that does not remove the challenge.
This volume maps the pathways — the ones that arrive uninvited through crisis, the ones that can be arranged through role and relationship, the contemplative routes — and is realistic about pace. Structural change is measured in years, and any programme promising otherwise is selling a horizontal result under a vertical name.
