Spiral Dynamics, from Clare Graves through Beck and Cowan, describes a sequence of value systems — survival, kinship, power, order, achievement, community, systemic, holistic — each of which emerges as a solution to the life conditions the previous one produced.
It is the most abused model in this field, routinely used to place other people low on a scale. Fifty-six chapters give the sequence accurately, each system from inside, and spend a disproportionate share of the length on why that use is both unpleasant and wrong: every system is a correct answer to the conditions it arose in, and carries gifts the later ones lose.
